Chia Seeds

Don’t you just love Costco?  My kids are obsessed with all the free food around every corner.  They enjoy trying the new food products and every time I get suckered into purchasing something or other.  You have to hand it to the product control at Costco, they know how to sell more food.  I go in to buy one or two things, and then end up buying one or two more things from these free demos.

The other day the new product was Chia Seed.  It was this tiny black seeds that were sprinkled on vanilla yogurt.  They were almost tasteless but gave the vanilla yogurt a little crunch that I found most enjoyable, and so of course I grabbed a bag and added it to my cart.   It was only $9.99, and my yogurt needed a new flare.  This was the obvious answer.

When I got home, I quickly googled the seed, and was surprised to see all the health benefits of this crazy little seed, there were 11 actually.  All I can picture in my head are the Chia Pets that my children once grew in our homes.  I’m sure you all seen those cute little grass like pets that were advertised on television for many years.

I was pleasantly surprised that after I ate my little test product sample, that my appetite was quickly suppressed.  Once I started reading up on these little things, it was quickly explained why my belly was feeling full.  When added to liquid, dry chia seeds immediately begin to form a hydrogel capsule, which honestly look like little tad poles (I did my own science experiment) and they can absorbing up to 27 times their weight in water.  Once these seeds hit my stomach they started to absorb the liquids in my stomach and started to expand.  It was magical.

Of course, this is one of their many health benefits that accompanies these incredible little seeds, but as I watched the seeds form these hydrogel as they sat in water on my cupboard, I found it symbolic to what I feel like in the mornings when I first wake up and before I spend my time in God’s word.  I feel like those little dry chia seeds.  Exhausted after my short night’s sleep, and dehydrated from life itself.

Once I sit in my lazy boy, and read and meditate on God’s word, I can feel the Holy Spirit’s presence filling me with His hydrogel of spirit.  It puts a gel around me that is usually untouchable to anything.  We all have the Holy Spirit inside of us, and that is one of the biggest things that I try and teach my own children.  God lives in every one of us, and if you learn to tap into him and his spirit inside of us, it’s unbelievable what He will do for you.

Romans 5:5 tells us, that we all have it.  It wasn’t just for the people many centuries ago, it still exists today.  The words from the Bible, says, “And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Just like this chia seed though, we won’t get to this unbelievable 27 times of our power unless we spend time in God’s word.  Reading it, and taking out of it, what we get out of it.  Don’t take my word for it, or your minister’s or priest’s word,Billy Graham’s or Joel Osteen’s word for it.  Dive into the word yourself and take your own understanding on it.

You two can be so much more than you are right now, just like the chia seed.  Life can dry you out, but if you add the water of the Holy Spirit to your daily routine, you too will swell up to 27 times your original size.  Try it and see!
