Time to Molt

Are you anything like myself?  Do you find once the holiday season is over you have outgrown your home somehow?  Every year I can’t wait to get rid of all the holiday décor, gifts, extra food, and anything else that is standing in my way.  I feel like I am smothering in my own home.  I need to reorganize and de-clutter ASAP, before I feel like I am going to mentally explode.

As the new year is settling in, and I am frantically throwing away anything that isn’t bolted down.  I wonder where all the junk comes from that piles up in my home.  How do my drawers get so crammed?  How do my kitchen cupboards not have room for any more food?  How do my closet doors not shut?  Maybe it’s a new house that I really need?  We are outgrowing this one…or one would think!

Then I started thinking of all the lucky animals that molt.  Shed their old homes when they outgrow or feel the need for a change.  Wouldn’t that be sweet?  Wouldn’t it be incredible if we could just shed our old homes ever new year and wait for a new one that eventually forms around us to fit the size that our life’s needs?  You have to admit, God has created some really cool creatures out there!

As awesome as molting sounds, it leaves these animals vulnerable for quite some time until their new skin, or home, completely forms again.  It must be so scary to have no protection around your body like that!  Ants and other insects or sea creatures can easily take advantage of the situation and eat these animals when they have no protective shell or skin.

Imagine if every new year, we would “molt” just like these animals.  Since it is a new year, new beginning maybe it is time to shed or molt our skin and make a change so that we don’t feel like we are going to mentally explode.  New years are full of harvest, full of fruit, full of opportunity, but we have to go through our molting process first, and this takes a lot of courage!

Just like these animals that molt and have to be exposed to the elements in their world, we too are going to be exposing ourselves.  We first have to believe that we can change.  Realize that life isn’t going to change around us, until we shed our old skin, and make way for new ideas, new views, and new philosophy.  It’s time to think outside the box…or outside of our old skin!

Maybe you want to start exercising and eating right, but that isn’t in your cards since you are so busy?  Or maybe you know you should be making some quite time for yourself so that you can meditate and get in touch with your inner self, but that is way outside your comfort zone?  Perhaps your marriage could use a little attention but you are scared how your significant other will react if you start acting differently?  Or could you want to stop drinking and partying now that you are getting older, but that is what you do with your friends and don’t know what else to do if you don’t?

Whatever it is, turn to your “Molting Handbook”!  In 2 Corinthians 5:17, it tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”  Try spending some time daily in this Molting Handbook and see what you can use as a guide to helping you survive this vulnerable molting stage!

Whatever it is you want to change in your life, you are going to feel vulnerable, because you are transforming your old self.  If these thoughts are going through your brain, that is your instinct.  Every animal reacts to its instinct.  That is what tells them it’s time to shed their skin.  The thought itself is your instinct telling you its time.  It’s time to shed your skin!  Shed it!  Now!  Don’t wait any longer, and refer to your handbook, when you don’t think you can make it.  I promise you’ll find something to encourage you until your transformation is complete!
